Do you see some of these people on social media or around you with incredible style who seem to have it all together?
Do you feel like you only follow the trends and don’t have your own style? Or you want to find your own style but have no idea where to start?
What if I tell you that even the most fashionable people weren’t born with an amazing fashion sense and that you can also develop your personal style!
You may ask that it would require a lot of money to find your own personal style but let me tell you one thing that money can neither buy taste nor style.
So now moving over to the practical side, here are 10 incredibly easy steps that you can follow along to figure out your own style.
9 No-fluff steps to finding your style
1. Go through your current wardrobe
Finding your style doesn’t mean that you have to throw away all of your old clothes and spend a thousand bucks to build a new wardrobe. Let’s be honest… we don’t have that much money to waste right!?
This is why we start by analyzing the clothes that we already own. For about a month, Start tracking the clothes that you actually wear.
Analyze what you’re more drawn towards and what you wear most often.
It can be clothes that make you feel more confident or comfortable. Either move them to a different place or rack so you don’t lose track of them.
Find the trends among them. Do you lean more towards neon colors or black and white? What color scheme, brands or material do you like to wear the most?
Are you more of an oversized hoodie type of person or do you like to rock some sexy mini skirts?
Just keep in mind that it should complement your lifestyle and nothing should be too uncomfortable.
Similarly, if you’re more a comfort seeker, then try stepping out of your comfort zone a little or just add it to your notes of finding your style.
2. Find your body type
You might notice that there are some clothes that look really pretty on certain body types and some just seem to ruin it.
Or when you go shopping, you pick an item that the mannequin is wearing and then realize that it doesn’t look good on you.
This is why my friend, it is important to find out your body type so you don’t waste your money on buying clothes that wouldn’t look good on you.
After this for reference, you can find a few celebrities or someone you personally know with the same body type as yours to get inspiration based on what would look flattering on your body type specifically.
3. Find your skin undertones
Do you know that your skin undertones can really influence what colors look better on you. The easiest way to find your skin tone is by looking at the vein color on your wrist.
You have a warm skin tone if it is greener. Likewise, if it is bluer, you have a cool skin tone. If you seem unsure, then you might have a neutral undertone.
Also, note the color of jewelry that you wear the most often. If you tend to wear more gold or rose gold, then you might have a warm undertone, and if silver, then you would have a cool undertone.
For cool undertones, you should try cold shades of color and for warm undertones, you should go for warmer colors. Neutral undertones can look good in basically every shade.
The best colors for cool undertones are shades with a green bias like manganese blue, lavender, rose, or grey.
For warm undertones, the best colors are honey, olive, cream, or coral. Neutrals look particularly good in red, jade, white, and medium blue.
4. Find inspiration
Now comes the fun part!! Once you have all of the above pieces together, then start finding inspiration for your style. There are multiple ways to do this.
You can get it through movie characters, magazine issues, fashion photography, or social media.
If you’re using Pinterest, then simply save your fav looks in a separate board for style or follow boards related to your sense of fashion style.
If you’re using Instagram, then the explore page is a really good source for finding inspiration.
And if you’re using fashion photography and magazine issues, then pin your fav finds on a wall or corkboard.
5. Refine your moodboard
Moving on, since you have enough inspiration, it’s time to refine your moodboard. Evaluate deeply everything that you are drawn towards and what doesn’t appeal to you.
Think of every aspect from whether you see yourself wearing that or you would look good in that, etc.
If you’re drawn towards more than one style, don’t hesitate to add it to your list as we are not trying to box ourselves here (just trying to find some direction towards our style).
6. Hit the mall
Next step is to finally go shopping. You should only pick maximum 5 pieces at a time and don’t go overboard with shopping the trendy catchy pieces.
Only shop those pieces that passed through the above criteria and you had initially decided while refining your mood board.
Another tip is to give yourself some time while shopping to go through everything, so in the end, you pick the right pieces and don’t end up wasting your money.
You can also try out some other pieces that appeal to you in the fitting room as it’ll further help you in evaluating your preferences and what actually looks good on you.
Also note, if you’re broke or simply can’t afford to shop at some mall, you can always try some pieces at your local thrift store. They usually have a lot of variety and are way cheaper.
You just need some time to find some really good pieces that would fit your style. Or you can just adjust them at home by DIYing.
7. Practice at home
You know that old saying that practice makes a man perfect. Well, women in this case ha!
Take out some time daily or some part of the week when you are free to practice styling.
No like seriously, it happens so many times that we have an outfit planned in our head but when it’s time to finally wear it, it looks nothing like we pictured it in your head.
In order to avoid this last-minute chaos and confusion, you should practice pairing different pieces together.
It will not only develop your style but you’ll also have some outfits planned in advance.
It also gives an idea of what pairings look good together and what we like.
Through trial and error, we learn a lot as no one is born perfect with an amazing style. Everyone learns through mistakes and blunders.
8. Express yourself
When you go through something transformative, you feel the need to communicate your feelings and let it out.
If you feel like everyone around you isn’t appreciative of your journey of finding your style, join some online community to express yourself like an amino, blog or any social media platform solely for your fashion finds or style solely.
9. Confidence, confidence and confidence
No matter what you wear or how weird everyone thinks your style is, confidence can absolutely change the game. Own every single mistake and blunder and rock it confidently.
You can either ruin an almost perfect outfit if you don’t look confident wearing that or steal the show with the help of confidence even if that outfit doesn’t make any sense.
Many people will criticize your style but don’t let anyone’s opinions affect you.
Always remember that people who criticize you for something without even knowing you are projecting their inner insecurities at you and it has nothing to do with you but everything about how they feel about themselves.
This is why you shouldn’t let others opinions control your life and be confident in whatever you wear:)
